Art Deco Bronze Statue, “Captive” by Jenő Kerényi, Hungary, 1929

A beautiful sculpture in bronze with a dark brown-black patina, mounted on a marble base. It depicts a nude female figure—highly elongated and stylized—characterized by a strong simplification of forms. She stands with her head thrown back, face turned toward the sky, arms behind her back, and feet bound. This is a model titled “Rab Nő / Rabszolganő”(Slave or Captive) by the Hungarian sculptor Jenő Kerényi (1908–1975). The sculpture, signed and dated (1929) on the base, is listed in the artist's catalogue raisonné. The work reflects a modernist Art Deco aesthetic while retaining the classical inspiration characteristic of Kerényi, whose sculpture frequently focuses on male and female figures captured in highly expressive poses of movement or tension. His work, widely exhibited throughout the 20th century (including at the 1960 Venice Biennale), is associated with the European Expressionist movement.
Dimensions: approximately 40 cm including the base (35 cm for the sculpture alone). Very good condition; some verdigris oxidation on the patina. Minor chips on the base.
