Small Dan Mask, Danané region, Côte d'Ivoire, early 20th century
Unknown artist — 1900-1925
An impressive small Dan mask. Elongated and oval in shape, it features a pointed chin, a wide, finely carved open mouth, a slender nose, prominent cheekbones, slit eyes, and a bulging forehead—all combining to create a highly expressive face. These masks, known as "Ma," served a protective function for the individual as a member of a lineage. It shows significant wear and bears a small engraved number on the interior. From the collection of a prominent Parisian gallerist and collector. Dimensions: 17 x 10 cm.
Good overall condition; heavy wear.
